There is "polite expression" in wikang hapon. "Ohayou gozaimasu" is polite expression and "Ohayou" is friendly expression. "Kon'nichiwa" or "Konbanwa" is polite expression and used friendly too.
They say "Kon'nichiwa" both at noon and afternoon in Japan.

Usually, they don't say the phrase correspond to "How are you?" in japan. "O-ganki desuka" and so on is used when they meet after long time no see or in letters.

"Shiturei simasu" is the phrase that a person who leave there] says. And the other persons say "Ki wo tu kete (Take care your self)" or "Mata ne (See you agein)" and so on.
"Bai-bai" is the same with "bye!"
